OVER 40,000 euro was raised for Haiti in the Parish of Tullamore in collections at Masses in one weekend.
The collection was taken up after Masses on Saturday evening and Sunday on the weekend before last to help the people of Haiti following the recent earthquake.
The money will be sent directly to Haiti through the Diocese of Meath. Fr Shane Crombie, CC, Tullamore, disclosed the figure for the remarkable generosity of people at those Masses.
In a statement, Tullamore parish said that Bishop Michael Smith is in frequent contact with an Irish missionary Sister Mary Hardiman, who is a Holy Union Sister working in Haiti.
The Bishop supports various projects run by Sister Mary. Her work includes caring for orphans, elderly, prisoners and people suffering from HIV/AIDS.
Trócaire, the Catholic Churches own aid agency, is working with 'Caritas Haiti', which runs over 200 hospitals and medical centres in the country.
They are skilled in the provision of clean water and sanitation which will be crucial in this response.
The parish team said they would like to express there thanks to all who contributed so generously to the appeal, and further contributions are most welcome.
Meanwhile students from Saint Philomena's School in Tullamore raised €1,638.44, also for Haiti.
The pupils spent the morning of last Friday week juggling in the Bridge Centre for the worthy cause.
The money will be presented to the Irish Red Cross. The Red Cross have members in Haiti carrying out emergency medical work in the area.
Meanwhile, a young Tullamore man who worked as a volunteer in Haiti last year is hosting a fundraising coffee morning in the town on Saturday morning.
UCD student Adam O'Doherty, is inviting all Tullamore people to join him for a cup of coffee in Digan's pub this Saturday, February 6 with all proceeds donated to Haiti.
The student travelled to poverty-stricken Haiti last June and raised €4,500 at a race night in Digan's for the UCD Vounteers Overseas(UCDVO) projects.
Money raised went to the football and construction projects UCDVO are carrying out on the island.
At Saturday's coffee morning in Digan's pub Adam is going to display photographs of his trip to show people where their donations went.
