MIDLANDS Architects McCarthy O'Hora (MCOH Architects) scooped a LAMA Award at a glitzy ceremony held in The Burlington Hotel on Saturday last.
The award for Best Commercial Building was presented for the Practice's recently completed outstanding Credit Union Building in Clondalkin Village, Co. Dublin.
This is the second LAMA Award for MCOH Architects, having previously won the Award in 2009 for Birr Civic Offices and Library for their client, Offaly County Council. The practice was also a LAMA finalist in 2008 for Portarlington Leisure Centre.
Saturday's Awards Ceremony was hosted by RTE's Miriam O'Callaghan and special guest for the evening was Minister Michael Finneran of the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government.
Speaking form the event, Tullamore man Conor Finnegan, Project Architect for the Credit Union Building said, 'We are delighted to have won this prestigious award for the Credit Union Building in Clondalkin. The site was particularly difficult as it is at the corner of a long junction, however, I feel we have provided an innovative and striking building in the heart of the village'.
The Credit Union was nominated in the Best Commercial Building Category by South Dublin County Council.
The citation read 'this striking and innovative building pivotally located in Clondalkin Village reflects members confidence in their Credit Union and the Community it serves'.
MCOH were commissioned by Clondalkin Credit Union with a brief to provide an innovative design solution to house their rapidly growing customer base and to include a new Business/Conference Centre.
The former Bank of Ireland building and site was selected for it's central and prominent location and following investigative studies by the Design Team it was decided to demolish the existing building and construct a new purpose built Credit Union.
The 695m2 two-storey building consists of a large oval shaped public area with feature curved counters, Consultation Rooms and Offices at Ground Floor level. The First Floor comprises of further Meeting and Interview Rooms, including the Board Room and other ancillary Staff Accommodation.
The use of large open circulation spaces and the double height public area with its glass membrane have been developed to create an innovative solution that meets the sustainable and functional requirements of the Credit Union.
The curved design of the building addresses the road junction by creating a focal point at the axis of Main Street and Convent Road in the village of Clondalkin. The contemporary design and development of this strategic and prime town centre site will greatly help regenerate the area and will add vitality and vibrancy to the existing town centre.
