THE death in tragic circumstances of Killeigh man John Vincent Walsh was met with deep sadness and regret by all those who knew him.
Vincent as he was best known was found dead on the summit of Croagh Patrick, in County Mayo last Friday, November 25th. It is understood that he climbed the mountain every Tuesday and Thursday.
A group of climbers discovered his body at 11.30 a.m. and dialled 999 saying a man was unconscious on the mountain.
A spokesperson for the Malin Head coast-guards told the Tribune that they tasked a helicopter from Sligo to the area at two minutes past noon. They winched a paramedic down to where Mr Walsh lay near the oratory and he confirmed that he had been deceased for some time. It is understood that Mr Walsh died from a heart attack.
However, due to adverse weather conditions they were unable to take him back into the helicopter. Instead the paramedic stayed with the body until the Mayo Mountain rescue arrived and stretchered him back down the mountain where he was taken by hearse to Mayo general hospital.
Vincent Walsh a single man from Derrygoalan was a well known beekeeper in the area and was a member of the Offaly beekeepers association for almost thirty years. He was also a member of the bee breeding group.
An expert in the field of beekeeping he gave talks on the subject and travelled abroad regularly to seminars. He was also a keen photographer with bees being his favourite subject. Chess was another interest and he was fascinated by how the game was played on the streets in other countries that he visited.
A spokesperson for the Offaly Beekeepers Association said Mr Walsh will be sadly missed by his fellow members and on the committee which he served on for the last two years.
The spokesperson continue,' he was always willing to help out, with beginners or in the apiary or anything he was asked to do.'
The funeral Mass of Mr Walsh took place on Tuesday morning at Killeigh church with burial afterwards to the local cemetery.
