TWO English men have bought the magnificent Annaghmore House in Ballyboy, just outside Tullamore.
The stately home which is set on 10-acres went on the market in 2009 with an asking price of €550,000. It was eventually sold for under that price last November.
It's understood the two people who bought the property plan to restore it to its original grandeur and it will be used as a home.
A spokesperson for Knights auctioneers said the buyers had looked at a number of houses in Ireland before settling on Annaghmore and are absolutely delighted with their purchase.
The historic house has links with two distinguished brewing families in Tullamore the Williams and Egans.
PJ Egan owned the house in 1919. The Egans were a well known family who owned pubs, malting houses and breweries in Tullamore. One of the Egans married a member of the Williams family which welded the brewing links with Annaghmore house. Prior to that it was owned by Maxwell Fox who was High Sheriff of Offaly.
The house remained in the Egan family until 1968 when it was sold to an American couple both university professors who used it as a summer home.
The two storey house was built in 1790 by the Curtis family. It features stables to the back with access through a segmental-headed carriage arch. There is a walled garden to the south-east with random coursed boundary walls and a three-bay two-storey former gardener's house, now derelict.
The main house is located at the end of a long winding avenue with the front door opening up to a superb hall featuring a striking staircase. The property contains impressive plaster-work with decorative cornicing and central roses.
It contains eight bedrooms, a spacious kitchen, reception and dining rooms. A back staircase gives access to a ground floor with servants quarters and pantry. The courtyard to the rear has four coach houses and three stables.
