Thursday, 2 February 2012
A STUDENT of the Sacred Heart School, Tullamore, Orla McManamly, was recently awarded the Joseph Plunkett Scholarship which recognizes the student who performs best in Irish and two other subjects from English, Accounting, Business and Economics in the Higher Level Papers - in this case English and Accounting.
In commemoration of each of the signatories of the 1916 Proclamation of Independence, the Minister of Education and Skills awards, each year, seven third level scholarships in accordance with the terms of the above named scheme, in recognition of the Leaving Certificate candidates who have received the highest results in the Leaving Certificate Examinations all over Ireland in designated subject areas.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, students must have completed the named subjects at higher level and performed commendably in these subjects in comparative terms.
In particular, the candidates awarded the scholarships must satisfy the department that she is a speaker of Irish and, as evidence of such, must have performed at a level deemed appropriate by the Minister in her Irish oral examination.
The scholarship involves a monetary bursary and is valid for the duration of the undergraduate's course and may be renewed following graduation for postgraduate studies, subject to a maximum of four years.
The scholarship offered is for attendance on approved full-time third level courses. Each of the seven scholarships are awarded to the candidate who performs best in Higher Level papers at the Leaving Certificate Examination 2011 in the appropriate group of subjects as indicated in each of the seven respective categories. Orla is one of seven such recipients in Ireland.
Orla was also the proud recipient of an Ad Astra Scholarship in UCD on January 23rd.
The UCD Ad Astra Academy offers unique opportunities and supports to a diverse group of high-achieving and highly talented students across the University. Through membership of the Academy, students displaying elite potential to international standards in academic pursuits, sports or performing arts are encouraged and supported to develop their talent further.
There are multiple opportunities for eligible students to join the UCD Ad Astra Academy community; on acceptance of a place on a UCD undergraduate programme or based on their subsequent performance as they progress through their studies.
The UCD Ad Astra Academic scholarship programme seeks to recruit exceptional high-achieving students and provide them with additional support and unique opportunities during their degree programme at UCD. UCD Ad Astra Academic Scholars will have already demonstrated academic excellence in their pre-university studies and examinations. Candidates attaining 6 A1s in the Leaving Certificate or equivalent (in line with general UCD admission policies) in the year of entry will be eligible to receive the UCD Ad Astra Academic scholarship.
Scholarship components include individual academic mentoring from a designated university professor; early access to advanced modules; participation in Universitas 21 network events; access to distinguished alumni; a place on a graduate programme, subject to meeting normal entry requirements; scholarship bursary; fee remission; reduction of on-campus accommodation costs and a stipend.
The academy encourages scholars to pursue academic horizons beyond the boundaries of their course and supports students in their quest for further knowledge in their chosen field. Orla is currently studying Actuarial and Financial Studies.
