Thursday, 9 March 2017
OFFALY Darts celebrated an historic All Ireland title on February 26th as they travelled to the West County Hotel in Ennis and left as the All Ireland champions to cap off a memorable year that also saw them claim the Leinster crown back in late 2016.
Managed by Mark Guinan along with secretary Leanne Holland, the 18 strong squad were in awesome form throughout the competition and blazed a trail all the way to the final where they defeated Donegal in a nail biting final that went down to the wire.
Captained by Shane O'Hara, the Offaly men had Wexford, Laois and Clare in the group stages.
The first game was against Wexford and after a tough encounter, a 6-6 draw was the outcome. Offaly made no mistake in their other two group games beating Laois and Clare 11-1 each and topping their group to advance to the last 16 on Sunday.
In the last 16 Offaly took on Monaghan and again, they got the job done in style beating them 7-2. A quarter final clash with a strong Galway team was set up and again, Offaly came out 7-2 winners.
Offaly were now in the last four of the All Ireland championship and as pressure mounted, the Offaly team kept their cool and beat Meath on a scoreline of 7-3 to reach the decider.
The final of the night was between Offaly and Donegal and it was nail biting stuff. It went right down to the wire as the game was 6-6 with Keith McNamara in for Offaly in the deciding leg.
Keith kept his nerve and at two legs each, he took out double 20 to seal the title amidst joyous scenes as the All Ireland crown made the journey back to the Faithful County.
