No proposal to move war memorial, council told thumbnailA Remembrance Ceremony at the War Memorial in Tullamore in the 1950s.

THERE is no proposal to move the war memorial from O'Connor Square in Tullamore to Lloyd Town Park.

That's according to Tullamore Town Manager, Mr Sean Murray.

Mr Murray was responding to reports that following discussions with the British Legion the monument is to be removed from O'Connor Square as part of the Town Enhancement Scheme.

He said during an ''in-committee'' meeting of Tullamore Municipal District, he had informed Councillors that he would be speaking to interested parties, including the British Legion, regarding the memorial.

In the final drawings which went out for public consultation, a plaque was shown to mark the spot where the war memorial currently stands but the memorial was conspicuous by its absence.

At the October meeting of the municipal district last week, Cllrs Tommy McKeigue, Brendan Killeavy and Declan Harvey said they knew nothing about the drawing and had not seen it until it went out for public consultation.

Last Thursday, November 9 was the final day for the public to make submissions on a set of proposals for O'Connor Square, High Street, Colmcille Street and a bridge linking Main Street, with the Bridge Centre car park.

Mr Murray said there had been considerable interest shown by members of the public and the Manager's report on the matter will be discussed at a meeting with councillors on November 20.

Cllr Tommy McKeigue asked if there was a final time-frame for works to begin and when it will go out to tender. He said he was concerned that it would go into the third year and coincide with the final of the Entente Florale which takes place in Tullamore.

Mr Murray told the councillors that ''the biggest influence will be yourselves.'' He went on to say they could accept or reject the final report, adding that if the plan is adapted then he hoped work will begin early in the New Year.
