Castlejordan start for Offaly 5k road race series thumbnail

THE Offaly Athletics 5k road race series will commence next Sunday, March 11 in Castlejordan at 12 noon.

The race is being hosted by Naomh Ciaran Athletics Club, which is based in Castlejordan, on the Offaly-Meath border. It is the first in nine races in the series which concludes in Birr on August 9.

Points from all nine races will be accumulated by participants, with overall and category winners in both ladies and men being declared at the end of it.

There has been a considerable growth in athletics in Offaly in recent years with clubs formed in Castlejordan, Daingean, Banagher and Rhode while clubs were reformed in areas such as Edenderry, Ballyskenagh, Clara and Birr - in addition to the county's oldest club, the Tullamore Harriers (formed in 1953) and the long standing Ferbane Athletics Club.

Participation numbers have spiraled and the aim of the Offaly 5k race series is twofold: to provide competitive races for athletes, hosted by the Offaly Athletics County Board, and to give clubs a chance to run a race in their own area.

The races will be held at regular intervals in March, April, May, June, July and August and in addition to Castlejordan this Sunday, they will be held in Ferbane, Edenderry, Tullamore, Ballyskenagh, Daingean, Clara, Banagher and Birr.

The overall winners must be members of Offaly athletics clubs but runners from outside the county are welcome to compete and they can win the individual prizes at each race - there are prizes at each race for the first, second and third finishers, and first junior, over 40, 45, 60 and 70 in ladies and men.

In addition the Offaly Athletics County Board will run county championships for 10k, 10 mile and the half marathon over the summer.

The 5k races are being chip timed by Pop Up Races, and details of this partnership were announced recently.

Speaking on behalf of Offaly Athletics, Chairman Darren Butler commented:

"The Offaly road race series is a great opportunity for runners, joggers and walkers of all abilities to take part in AAI approved races, organised and run by runners. This partnership should lead to increased numbers at each event, meaning increased revenues that can then be re-invested into grassroots athletics right across the county. We are very much looking forward to working with Brian and his team over the coming year"

Pop Up Races are one of Ireland's fastest growing race timing and event management companies, and Managing Director (and co-founder) Brian Conroy was delighted to announce the arrangement.

"Having worked with Edenderry Athletics Club in recent years, we have a good knowledge of the club scene in Offaly and are very excited to be part of this year's series. Offaly Athletics are a very progressive and well organised county board, and we believe this partnership can only benefit each club in Offaly as well as the participants of each race in the series, who will now get a gun and chip time as well as a unique, memorable and professional race day experience from the Pop Up Races timing team"

Entrants will be able to pre register on, or else register on the day of the event.

Offaly Athletics are keen to emphasise that these events are welcoming, well organised and are open to athletes of all abilities.
