Brosna Gaels/ Clara. All Ireland Feile Div7 Hurling Champions. thumbnailCelebrating All-Ireland success

Congratulations to the under 14 hurlers of Brosna Gaels and Clara who had a fantastic win in this year's Feile na nGael.

Both clubs did not have enough players to field teams on their own so a decision was made earlier this year to pool their players together and amalgamate as one team.

Having gone through the group stages in Offaly we qualified for the division 3 final where we had a great win over Shamrocks in The Faithfull Fields. This gave us the right to represent Offaly at the National finals.

So on Friday evening last we headed for Sligo where we played the hosts Naomh Eoin from Sligo and Cootehill from Cavan.  We acquitted ourselves very well in both games and picked up 4 points in total from both games.

After some refreshments all roads lead to Castlebar where we were greeted by our host families at Castlebar Mitchells GAA Club. The boys headed off for the night with their "new families" where they were treated very well.

The next morning we met up in Castlebar where we played the host club in the final game of the group. The boys put in a huge performance in this game and the victory was never in doubt.

After a parade through the streets of Castlebar we were on our way to the Connacht GAA Centre for a quarter final meeting with Athleague Tremane from Roscommon.

In very warm conditions we got off to a blistering start which laid foundation to a brilliant win. The team were now playing excellent hurling with some fantastic performances all over the field. The boys were tired and as we headed back to Castlebar for the night a semi final awaited us the next day.

We met with our host families for the final time on Sunday morning as we departed for Mullagh in Galway. We had a quick puck around on the way in St. Marys in Athenry where we again had some well deserved refreshments before reaching our destination. The boys seemed calm but also excited as we reached the final four of our division.

Upon our arrival at Mullagh GAA club it was encouraging to see so many supporters who had made the trip over to support the team.

Our opponents in the semi final were Na Fianna from Laois who also wore a similar jersey to ours.  Both teams had to change jerseys and thanks to Doon GAA Club for providing us with their jerseys.  This didn’t affect the team at all as we tore into the Laois lads from the start. We lead by 7 at the break and were really playing well.  In the second half tempers flared as na Fianna adopted quite a cynical approach to the game and only for some cool heads from our lads this game could have spilled over. When the final whistle sounded it was Clara /Brosna Gaels who had secured the final spot.

The final was played in Duggan Park in Ballinasloe in front of a large crowd and the opposition was Roscommon Gaels.  This team had won all of their previous games by big margins and were hotly tipped to win this division.  Our boys found themselves behind for the first time all weekend and things didn’t look good as we approached half time 3 points down.  Roscommon Gaels increased their lead to 4 points early in the second half as we found ourselves in further arrears.

A few smart positional switches by our management with 5 minutes remaining proved to be the changing of the game.  We reduced the lead to 2 points with 1 minute remaining and deep into injury time in true Offaly fashion Tommy Bracken hit the back of the net after a goal mouth scramble. Seconds later the referee blew the full time whistle and Clara/Brosna Gaels were champions.

There was jubilant scenes as joint captains Ultan Carroll James Dunne lifted the cup for what was a fantastic achievement and a memorable weekend.

Thanks to the management team of Mel Doyle Sean Foley Rene Fleming and Glen Corcoran and to the ladies and backroom staff who did such great work with this great group of boys.

There were great scenes on the way back as supporters welcomed home their victorious heros.

The Brosna Gaels representatives were:

Dean Buckley Ultan Carroll Donal Shirley Oisin Carroll Oisin Corcoran Sean Og Foley Dylan Daly Adam Mc Cann and  Pauric Brazil.
