Geashill judged the tidiest village in Ireland thumbnailAnna Marie Delaney - Chief Executive Offaly County Council with their award after being named Tidiest Village in Ireland

GEASHILL is officially the tidiest village in Ireland, scooping the top accolade at an awards ceremony held in the commissioners office Belfast on Tuesday June 26.
Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring was on hand to present the prizes.
The competition is a collaboration between the Northern Ireland Best Kept Awards and the Tidy Towns in the south.
It was last April that the tidy towns committee in Geashill first found out they had been nominated to participate and judging took place in May.
Chairperson of the committee Caren Carruthers said the flowers were not in full bloom at the time of the adjudication. However, she said last Tuesday, the judges told the committee it was the built heritage and the green in the pretty village that impressed them most.
Chief Executive Officer of Offaly County Council, Anna Marie Delaney attended the awards ceremony and the committee say they are very grateful for her and the council's support.
''They have done everything we asked them to do, like replacing worn signs. They have been a huge support. We really couldn't fault them,'' added Caren.
Caren said they are thrilled with the win which brought a prize of €2,500.
''It will be a great boost. We have a huge amount of projects like restoring the telephone boxes and planting,'' she said.
Geashill has been ranking extremely high in Tidy Towns competitions over the past few years and with this latest win under their belt the hard-working committee will be hoping for even better when the Tidy Towns results are made known in September.
