MONKSLAND United at last got their first league win of the season in the CCFL Division 3B basement battle at Killurin on Sunday.
Home side St Carthage's, a new team this season from Rahan, had only one victory to their credit in the league and will perhaps be disappointed with the heavily one-sided scoreline resulting from this encounter.
They dominated much of the first half yet found themselves behind at the break after Derek Egan scored in the 36th minute with a free header for the visitors from Athlone.
Monksland were awarded a free kick close to the half-way line and Egan was somehow left totally unmarked in the box as the long ball came in and hardly had to jump as he nodded the ball home from an unmarked position.
Before that, Carthage's had chances when Geoff Moran chested down to Pat Walsh, whose shot was saved low by Oisin Strong, and when the keeper punched JP O'Brien's corner as far as Walsh, who was annoyed with himself when he drove his volley wide.
Sean Rosney also lobbed a ball over the Monksland bar prior to the Egan goal while Ross Naughton did shoot left of the goals after a mazy run for Monksland.
Just four minutes into the second half Monksland doubled their lead when Kevin Brennan finished a swift attack brilliantly with a low shot from right to left to the far corner.
It was looking bad for Carthage's at that stage as a series of attacks came to nothing but they were given some hope in the 64th minute when Geoff Moran's well struck effort from inside the box found the net.
Monksland actually hit the bar from the kick-off and then in the 75th minute David Lennon slid the clincher under opposing goalkeeper Shane Rosney as the ball broke loose to him after Carthage's thought they had repelled another assault.
As if to underline the basic point that football is about putting the ball in the back of the net, Monksland rounded off the triumph with a superlative strike from the right hand side of the box with eight minutes of normal time left.
