Killeigh Community Games Athletics And Swimming

Thursday, 8 July 2010

KILLEIGH Parish have now successfully run their swimming and athletics trials to select the team to represent the parish in the county finals.
The committee of the Killeigh Parish Community games would like to thank all the children, the parents, grandparents and guardians who brought their children to the swimming and athletics trials. We would also like to thank all the volunteers who helped make the trials a great success and also all of the sponsors of the raffle prizes.
We had 19 children participate in the swimming and 73 children in the athletics. The community games is set up so that the maximum amount of children can participate for their area. This means that we are sending a team of 16 swimmers , 2 gymnasts and 39 track athletes to the county finals this month. Next year we hope to have an even bigger team of children going to the county finals as we look to participate in all the field events as well.
The swimming trials were in the pool in Portarlington and with the help of the staff there, all the children were also assessed by an experienced swim coach. We had the pool booked for an hour, the first half hour was used to run the trails and the second half hour was playtime. We initially had 27 children registered to swim but with holidays and prior committments we had 19 on the day which is a great number for a area starting up again.
Our athletics trials day went off without a hitch. There were 20 volunteers on the day making sure each of their roles went like clockwork. There were traffic coordinators with valet parking in some cases, field preparation, shop attendents, raffle sellers, registrars, team coachs, photographer, judges, announcer, results collector, water boy & girls & medal presenter. All of these volunters meant the evening was fun for everyone. The weather was perfect , there was tea and coffee being served, a fund raising raffle with plenty of prizes and our very own Olympian from the parish of Killeigh Pauline Curley was there on the evening to present the medals to the children. There was a "who am I" game to see if the children could guess who our celebrity medal presenter was and every child knew the answer.
A special thank you to Buntu and Eamonn of the Offaly Sports Partnership for all the work they done in preparing the children and again to Eamonn for his encouragement and support to revive the games in the area.
We encourage the wider community to come and support the children at the athletics county finals in the Harriers on Sunday 11th July.
