THE second round of the national league was held in Athlone last Sunday with both the women and men's teams bidding to qualify for the finals to be held in Tullamore next month .With eight teams to qualify the men's team progressed to the final in a very comfortable fifth place and in the process broke two club records.
The first record to go was the 4x100 metre relay mark and this was achieved by the quartet of Alan Whelan, Gordon Kennedy, Fearghus Hannon and Eoin Hannon who clocked a very impressive time of 42.30.
The second record to be broken was the long standing 4x400 metre relay time set back in 1987 by the Milner brothers Dermot, Seamus John and Charlie along with Cathal Devery with a time of 3.22.20. This record was smashed by the quartet of Alan Whelan, Larry O'Reilly, Fearghus Hannon and Gordon Kennedy with a super time of 3.19.99. There were numerous other good performances and every athlete contributed to the clubs safe passage through to the final.
The Women's team put in a very brave effort and were rewarded with a place in the final when finishing in eight position. The only winner on the day was was Liz Cuskelly in the 3000 metres with Niamh McNamara taking a good second in the 400 metres. Other second place finishes were recorded by Pauline Curley in the 1500 metres, Georgina Touhey in the 1500 metres Walk and Kelly Cunningham in the Discus. The rest of the team contributed greatly to ensure its place in the final in Tullamore next month.

European Masters Championships.
Ger Hensey competed in the European masters track and field championships in Hungary last week. Ger has been troubled by injury recently and was apprehensive as he lined up for the 100 metre heats. Ger finished in third place in his heat in 11.82 to qualify for the semi finals. In the semis Ger finished in fourth place in 11.79 and just missed out on a place in the final by 0.05 of a second.

July 31st : National combined events championships, Tullamore.
August 14th : National League Final, Tullamore..
August 15th : National Masters Track and Field, Tullamore.
September 5th : Gowran 8 at 10.00 am.
September 19th : Neville 10 at 10.00 am.
Training: Tuesday and Thursday at 6.30pm, Sunday morning at 8.30am Except on a race day. New members always welcome.
