Offaly Rowers Star At Home International Regatta
Thursday, 29 July 2010
THE Home International Regatta between Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales was held at the National Rowing Centre in Inniscarra Co. Cork on the 24th July 2010. Joanne and Eimear Moran from Offaly Rowing Club represented Ireland in the womens double scull and the quadruple scull categories. Joanne and Eimear won in the double scull with a second win for Eimear along with former Offaly Rowing Club member Sheila Clavin in the quadruple scull. Frank Durkin from Offaly Rowing Club was the Irish coach to the senior womens crews.
Competing in the open double scull category Eimear and Joanne powered away from the start to lead for the race. The Welsh crew proved no match for the Offaly Rowers who cruised to a handsome victory by several lengths. The final result was Ireland, Wales, England and Scotland.
Sheila Clavin of St. Michaels Rowing Club Limerick formerly Offaly Rowing Club and Dympna Kelly from Carrick-on-Shannon competed in the lightweight double sculls provided an exciting finish for the spectators at the Home International. In a race to the finish the Irish double put in an almighty push for the line to catch up and pass the leading Welsh crew in the last twenty strokes to finish a metre ahead of the Welsh crew.
There was a convincing win for the quadruple scull of Eimear Moran, Sheila Clavin, Siobhan Forman and Dympna Kelly at the Home Regatta. The crew of the quadruple scull took the lead early in the race and maintained the lead throughout with little or no threat from their competitors finishing a distance over their rival.
The overall result of the Homes Regatta is determined by the results in each race. Ireland won the Senior and Junior women's matches with England and Wales winning the Senior and Junior men's matches respectively. Ireland won five of the Senior Women's events, with Offaly rowers and former rowers contributing to three of these wins.
