THE members and friends of Esker Hill's Golf Club gathered on Sunday evening last to celebrate what was a most remarkable year for the club.
Club Captain Sean Doolan starting the evening's proceedings by recgonising the many achievements of the club in 2011. Sean spoke firstly of Esker Hill's Junior Club Captain Alan Lowry who made a burst onto the national golfing scene this year when he competed with Leinster team in the National Boys Championship at Sligo Golf Club.
Alan also made formidable appearances in the Ulster Boys, Connaught Boys, Leinster Boys and the Munster Boys championships to mention just a few of the many national championships he competed in.
Alan was justifiably absent from the evenings presentations as he was out in Dubai watching his brother Shane finish off a magnificent year on the European Tour.
One of Alan's many highlights for the year was his winning of the Birr Scratch Cup and that winning mentality ensures the future is certainly bright for the brother of the Esker Hills Touring Professional and the club is indeed truly proud of his achievements to date.
Captain Sean moved on to congratulate all the members who participated in inter club competitions during 2011 and remarked that many of the teams enjoyed successful runs in their respective
endeavors.
Sean made a presentation to Team Manager Kevin O'Regan and his team on their winning of the Castlebarna Shield. The team had to overcome serious opposition on their way to the finals where they overcame a very resilient Longford Golf Club to take the title.
Sean acknowledged the clubs continued association and support with a number of charity golf events. The 3T's is one such event where the charity runs an annual golfing event through out Ireland each year to raise the awareness of mental health and suicide issues in Ireland.
Esker Hills is proud to be associated with the charity and competes in the event each year with about 150 other golf clubs in Ireland. The club runs a competition along side an existing competition on the club calendar and this year the winning team to represent Esker Hills was Paul Stewart, David Coffey, Lorretto Flynn and Sean Doolan.
The team represented Esker Hills at their regional section in St Margaret's Golf Club where they qualified from the large field for the finals at the K Club. Competing against the winners of the other regional finals the Esker Hill's team won the day and went on to represent Ireland at the International Finals in La Cala Golf Club in Spain. The team went on to win that final and were presented with mementos from the club in recognition of their success.
The Holmpatrick Cup competition is another charity event supported by the members of Esker Hill's and qualification for the national section is run early in the year in conjunction with an existing fourball club competition.
The funds raised in this competition go toward funding the services provided to over 16,500 people living with sight loss all over Ireland under the guidance of the National Council for the Blind of Ireland.
David Hogan and Gary Scanlon won the club section of the competition and made their way through the qualifying rounds to the Regional Finals in Portmarnock Golf Club. The lads played some excellent golf in the regional finals to win the right to represent Leinster in the competition final which was held in the home of golf, St Andrews Golf Club Scotland.
David and Gary continued their flawless golf in the final and took the national title when they won the event in some style in front of some friends and family that traveled to witness their endeavors.
Captain Sean made a presentation on behalf of the club to the lads in recognition of their achievement. Gary Scanlon speaking on behalf of the pairing thanked their friends and family for traveling to support them and also thanked the club for all their support up to and including the final.
With Provincial, National and indeed International achievements recognized and honoured Captain Sean then focused on the all important club honours. John Fenlon won the coveted Golfer of the Year trophy with the ever present Liam Keegan and Liam Wyer combining to take the Foursomes title. John McEvoy ended his successful year by winning the well contested Club Match Play with the much sought after Mixed Foursomes title going to Liam Keegan and Joan Murphy.
Captain Sean concluded proceedings by thanking all those for attending on the night and congratulated all the prize winners.

He singled out the incomparable Joe Monaghan for special thanks for taking the MC duties on the night and he wished one and all a successful, enjoyable 2012.
