Good Omen For Offaly Hurling As Baker Leads Corrigans To Victory
In what will hopefully be a good omen for Offaly hurling in 2012 Ollie Baker led the Corrigans to victory in the Offaly Hurlers Golf Society's Christmas outing held in Esker Hills Golf Club last Wednesday, 28th December. In the competition played in a scramble format, it was not so much a victory but an annihilation of the whole field as Ollie (12) joined by Denis (12), Mark(13) and Micheal (5) Corrigan romped home by two shots with a gross of 10 under par and a net of 57.5. The scoring was very hot indeed, so much so that last year's winning score would not have even featured in the prizes this year.
Another possible pointer to hurling fortunes for 2012 saw current Offaly hurlers feature in the 2nd and 3rd place teams, Derek Molloy (5) joined by Shane Molloy (5) Connor Spain (7) and Padraig Hannon (18) were 8 under for a net score of 59.5 and Stephen Egan (1) with Pat Fleury (17), Johnny Dooley (15) and Damien Fox (5), 7 under for a net of 60.2.
Esker Hills, as ever, was in wonderful condition and while being in the top 50 courses in Ireland must surely be in the top five for winter golf. A total of 18 teams played on the day which only saw two light showers, just as well considering the extremely windy conditions which prevailed. The 11.00a.m. shotgun start also proved to be a real winner with all arriving back in the clubhouse within 10 minutes of each other and saw a real party atmosphere develop.
Following presentation of prizes, the 2012 President, Johnny Flaherty and Captain Noel Lyons were introduced to the assembled. Proceedings were wrapped up with the Secretary wishing Coolderry all the best in their up coming All-Ireland semi-final in February.
The outings for 2012 have already being booked with the Presidents Prize on the 11th May in Tullamore, the Captains Prize in Birr on the 31st August and back again to Esker Hills on the 28th December for the Christmas outing.
