Tullamore Firsts Secure Fine Victory

Thursday, 12 January 2012

Tullamore 1sts, 2 Suttonians 0. ON Saturday last in the Harriers Grounds, Tullamore firsts hockey team welcomed Suttonions in their first game of the new year.
Tullamore were depleted in numbers on this occasion with Monica Cleary, Grace Brennan, Ciara Geoghan and Kate O'Brien all out of action. Tullamore looked the more dangerous side in the opening minutes of the game with numerous goal chances falling to Niamh Redmond and Amanda Haslam. Tullamore continued to press for their first goal. Central defender Emma Delahunt and central midfielder Sabrina Carroll worked tirelessly and supplied the forwards with ample opportunities.
During this period Tullamore succeeded in gaining no less that three penalty corners. However all of these resulted in even more missed opportunities. Ten minutes from the half time whistle Tullamore capitalised on this pressure with their first goal. Ailish Redmond cleared the ball from defence and she was aided by Kirby Cox. Amanda Haslam got on the end of this pass and sent it across the goal mouth to the awaiting Niamh Redmond who was unlucky not to score with her shot. Left forward was on hand to deflect the rebound into the net for a text book style goal. Sutton responded with some pressure of their own. They too were awarded with a number of short corners and were somewhat unlucky not to score from these. Deirdre Rigney and Aideen Mahon did well but Tullamore had goalkeeper Clodagh Armitage to thank for keeping them ahead at half time.
The opening minutes of the second half saw Tullamore defend desperately as the Dublin side came out with a new energy. Again goalkeeper Clodagh Armitage was forced to pull off a number of top class saves. Tullamore still looked dangerous on the counter attack and against the run of play could have went two ahead. Sutton still pressed for the equaliser and they two were awarded with a penalty corner and it was Kirby Cox who saved brilliantly. Not long from the end of the game Tullamore earned a well deserved short corner. Amanda Haslam took the corner with a pass to Emma Delahunt who flicked it to Sabrina Carroll who was lining up for a shot at the top of the circle. Sabrina sent in a powerful shot to the right hand corner of the net but it was excellently saved by the Sutton goalkeeper. It was the hardworking Una Condron who again took the deflection into the net. Tullamore were two up at the stage and there was no way back for Sutton.
Next week the Tullamore firsts team are away to Monkstown.
Tullamore 1sts team: Clodagh Armitage, Ailish Redmond, Deirdre Rigney, Aideen Mahon, Emma Delahunt, Melissa Eades, Sabrina Carroll, Kirby Cox, Sarah Keegan, Niamh Redmond, Amanda Haslam, Una Condron.
