Brady Helps Ireland To Silver Medal At Celtic International CC
Thursday, 12 January 2012
Todd Moore, Vice President Athletics Ireland presents an Outstanding Service Award to Mick Hayden.
THE Celtic International Cross Country Championships took place in Edinburgh on Saturday last. Teams from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Ulster competed for medals in the Celtic International which was incorporated into the Great North Cross Country event.
Three Olympic Champions, Kenenisa Bekele, Asbel Kiprop and Brimin Kipruto, competed in the Men's 3k event and it was a great opportunity for Liam Brady and his Irish team mates to see these great athletes in action. The muddy conditions sapped the strength from the legs of all the athletes including Bekele and Kipruto who were well beaten in their race. Liam Brady competed in the U-23 6,000m event and he started strongly but took a fall on the first of three laps. He was up quickly and continued to battle all the way to the finish, coming home in 11th place in 21 minutes 49 seconds. With Emmett Jennings (DSD) in 3rd and Liam Tremble (Metro St Brigid's) in 7th the Irish team took second place behind Scotland, with Wales in third. Ireland's European CC champion, Fionnuala Britton, ran a great race to win the senior women's race.
Leinster Star Awards
The Annual Leinster Athletic Awards took place last Friday night in the Seven Oaks Hotel in Carlow. The Offaly Senior award went to Joseph Mulligan for the third year in a row and was well deserved as he had another great year in the throwing events, winning numerous championship medals in the process.
Eileen Rafter and Dean Power won the awards for the best Offaly Juvenile female and male athlete respectively. Eileen and Dean won their awards based on their performances in Leinster competitions throughout 2011. This is a great honour to receive and should spur these talented athletes to even greater things in 2012.
Tullamore Harriers stalwart Mick Hayden was a worthy recipient of an Outstanding Service Award for his long service to athletics in Leinster. In his association with athletics that spans six decades, Mick had an outstanding running career along with playing no small part in building up Tullamore Harriers to the successful and thriving club it is today. Mick has always been there to help with coaching and is to this day a constant encouraging voice to all athletes.
As a recipient of this award, Mick follows in the footsteps of previous Offaly winners, Ann Coughlan, Paddy Larkin and Monty Franks.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Harriers member and Juvenile coach, Damien Lawlor and his new bride Miriam Ryan who celebrated their wedding last Friday.
