Solid Tullamore Triumph In Midlands Derby
Thursday, 26 January 2012
Tullamore 12. Roscrea 10.
Tullamore kicked off into a strong wing and Roscrea secured the ball. From the first ruck a Roscrea' winger found Tullamore asleep and he ran the length of the field to score under the posts. The conversion was missed.
Roscrea were a strong team and were the better team in the opening 10 minutes. Despite an injury Jake Cooney came on in the pack with Billy Fogarty moving to out half. Jake made some great runs into Roscrea's half and Billy kicked well for territory into the stiff breeze.
From one of these long cross field kicks, Brian Cleary followed up brilliantly and grubber kicked the ball forward to score a great try. Michael Feely kicked what turned out to be a very important conversion from a difficult angle into the wind to leave the score 7- 5. Roscrea carried the ball well at Tullamore and scored another unconverted try before at half time.
Tullamore had the wind in the second half and made good use of it. Despite injuries to Paul Lanier, Jake Cooney and Luke Nolan, some excellent rugby was played with Adam Owens outstanding for Tullamore throughout.
Tullamore's backs moved the ball well and scored in the corner when Patrick Fahey again won the race from a kick forward from Billy Fogarty. The difficult conversion was missed to leave Tullamore 12-10 in front. Tullamore were unlucky not to score more tries but also had to defend solidly throughout as Roscrea fought hard for a winning score.
Tullamore needed a win and it was well deserved. The performance was an improvement on the Longford game last week and another improvement will be needed when the play Birr next week in Leinster League.
