Making The Cut The Target For Lowry In Dubai

Thursday, 9 February 2012

MAKING the weekend cut will be the priority for Shane Lowry when he tees off at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in Dubai this Thursday.
Lowry has failed to make the cut in his opening two tournaments of the season and while he will not be overly concerned at this, he will be anxious to get off the mark fairly soon.
The Clara professional golfer also made a sluggish start to the 2011 season after missing the early months through injury before going on to have some sensational tournaments, making the season ending Dubai World Championship and playing some fantastic golf.
There is also pressure on him to get money into the bank as he has to earn his European Tour card again this season but considering him immense ability and the form he showed at times last season, this should be a formality.
Lowry will be part of a six strong Irish contingent in Dubai this week, along with new world number two, Rory McIlroy, and Michael Hoey, Peter Lawrie, Damien McGrane and Gareth Maybin.
Lowry missed the cut in his first tournament in Abu Dhabi and last weekend, he again failed to make the weekend action when he competed in the Commercialbank Quatar Masters in Doha Golf Club.
Lady luck did not shine on Lowry as he played some fine golf but just didn't get the birdies he needed. It was a thin line as Lowry finished the tournament on two over, just one shot outside the cut mark and it would have took very little for him to make Sunday's final round - The tournament was reduced to fifty four holes after the cancellation of Friday's second round because of strong wind.
The damage was done with a three over 75 on Thursday in a see-saw round that included six bogeys, one birdie and a sensational eagle at the par four sixteenth,
That left him up against it when the action resumed on Saturday but he produced some of his best golf to finish on a one under 71 - His round included three birdies and two bogeys and he was within touching distance of making the mark. Some crucial putts didn't drop for him but he still showed signs of coming into best form and he will be hoping to reach this in Dubai this weekend.
