Gold for Walsh in Tenerife boxing tournament

GRAINNE Walsh captured the gold medal in a big boxing tournament in Tenerife last week.

The Tullamore boxer was delighted to get a split decision over a tough Welsh fighter, Rosie Eccles in 69kg division at the Boxam tournament on the Canary island.

The tournament had entries from Ireland, Spain, Austriua, Belgium, Bulgaria, Scotland, Finland, France, Wales, Hungary, England, Israel, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, Russia and Turkey.

A member of the Sparticus Boxing Club in Tullamore, Walsh was one of a three strong Irish team at it with Kellie Harrington also winning gold in her 60kg class.

Eccles is the current European silver medalist and Walsh said afterwards: "I was not my best performance and I have plenty to improve on but it is all experience and I am chuffed to get the win. 2018 is going to be a big year."
