A STUNNING win at the Abu Dhabi Championship last weekend has set Clara professional golfer, Shane Lowry up for a big season.
It was Lowry’s fourth professional win – he won the Irish Open as an amateur ten years ago and won the Portugese Open and Bridgestone Invitational in paid ranks – and it is potentially a career changing one. He has come through a turbulent couple of years, losing his US PGA Tour card last year, but Saturday’s success moves him up to 41st in the world and ensures qualification for all of golf’s biggest events.
His target is to make Padraig Harrington’s Ryder Cup squad next year and while the race for that doesn’t get underway until later in the year, this win gives him a great launching pad.
He enjoyed a stunning post to pillar success in Abu Dhabi. He stormed into the lead with an extraordinary -10 62 in Wednesday’s first round and held a three shot lead going into Saturday’s closing round. It looked like his worse nightmare was unfolding as not only did South African Richard Stern overhaul him on the front nine but he went four shots clear through 11. Lowry then mounted a sensational comeback and sealed victory with a birdie four on the 18th.
