AN ecumenical service recalling the Great War and Offaly’s links with the conflict was held in the Methodist church, Tullamore on Sunday last, the centenary of the Armistice in 1918.
Clergy from the four main churches in town took part – Fr Joe Gallagher and Fr Shane Crombie, Canon Isaac Delamere, Rev. William Hayes and Rev. Clodagh Yambasu.
The organist was Mieke Scholte and members of Tullamore Town Band also contributed to the music. The sermon was preached by Rev. Yambasu who spoke about her own experiences of war in Sierra Leone in the mid 1980s.
During the service a wreath was presented by a representative of the four churches and later placed at the memorial in O’Connor Square.
See next week’s Tribune for more stories on Offaly’s links with the war in light of the publication of “Offaly and the Great War”.
