THE switching on of the Christmas lights in Clara will take place on Saturday, December 8 this year which is a little later than last year.
The committee want it to coincide with a Christmas party which is taking place in the Family Resource Centre.
Once again the committee is disappointed that nobody other than themselves showed up for the AGM which was held earlier in the month.
Member of the committee Patricia Handy, said at least some of those who volunteered for house to house collections last year have come onboard this year which she is very grateful for.
Patricia says the committee got council funding but described it as “minimal.”
She feels they would probably get more if they had to pay for services. For example everything is on a voluntary basis which includes those who erect the lights and those who store them.
Whereas she said in other places they pay for storage etc and get more funding as a result.
The Christmas Lights committee is very small and consists of around 8 people who have been doing the job for years. There was a fear last year there would be no lights, however, there was a good turn out for a meeting held to discuss the matter with the result the lights went up in 2017.
The person to switch on the lights this year will be chosen by raffle. Everyone who donates in the door to door collection is put into the hat.
