THREE Tullamore schoolchildren have been awarded special gold badges from Trocaire following a successful cake sale which they hosted in the Bridge Centre.

Sisters Ailbhe and Clodagh Hynes, and their brother Andy, who held the event on Holy Thursday, raised €877 and are the first primary schoolchildren in Ireland to receive the awards.

In a thank you letter from Lauren Lennon of the Schools Team Trocaire she told the children that the money they raised can buy clean filtered water for schools, life saving medicine, seeds for planting and more.

''It will make a big difference to the lives of Maria, Maya, Patricia'' (the three children featured on this year's Trocaire box) ''and their families,'' she wrote.

''We are so impressed with your kindness here in Trocaire that I have included a very special award. Normally we award these badges to secondary school students who have raised a lot for Trocaire. You are the first three primary students in all of Ireland to receive the Trocaire Schools Award Gold Badge,'' she informed the three siblings.
