A BITTERLY disappointed Grainne Walsh lost out to a controversial split decision when she was eliminated in the last sixteen of the Women's Elite World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, India at the weekend.
The Tullamore woman had focussed on these championships for the year and having reached the quarter-final in her last appearance at them, she had set her sights on a semi-final place.
Unfortunately, she was eiliminated on a tight split decision in her welterweight fight against Argentina’s Lucia Noella Perez with observers insisting that she deserved to get the decision.
Walsh boxed well, finding the mark with some heavy punches as well as knocking out Perez's gumshield at one stage.
23 year old Walsh has developed into an international standard boxer, having excelled at soccer in her young teens. A member of Spartacus Boxing Club in Tullamore, she has been in the Irish elite set up in recent years. She was part of a six strong squad thad made the long trek to India – the team manager is Bernard Dunne while her club copach, Dmitry Dimitruk was one of the coaches.
